Work of Art: An Intention of Flowers

Oily pavement.

Thick tempera paint.

A parking lot filled with history, fear, and regret.

A young man named Joseph Arillo sits in the parking lot and paints the pavement with flowers.

And Andy Hollis steps in it.

As the new art teacher at Santa Ana High School, he’s too curious about Joseph’s Flowers and unravels both of their lives in his pursuit for answers.

He learns that it’s all part of a rite of passage, an absurd test started by Joseph Arillo’s father, the suspiciously world-renowned artist named only Tom. Which also connects to the drama teacher at Santa Ana High, Katie Bustos. Whose daughter, Desiree, may or may not be dating Joseph. Who is putting himself in danger from a local gang, the lot’s mysterious history, and the police.

Andy puts himself in danger of losing his job, his home, and his freedom. If he can’t solve the riddle of Joseph’s Flowers, both of their lives will go up in smoke – despite any help from Winny, the old, Slovakian bureaucrat at school, or his students, or Tom himself.

But is Tom trying to help? And is Joseph really up to his father’s test?

And is Andy really fit to be a teacher? He doesn’t understand kids, can’t get to school on time, and… doesn’t appear to care about art or families or anything. But Joseph’s Flowers will challenge everything Andy believes: about himself, about the world, and most importantly of all about art.

Before Andy and Joseph are finished, they will witness the power art has to provide inspiration, to waken our hearts, and to shatter everything you ever believed about humanity.

An Intention of Flowers is the first book in a 5-book series, modestly titled Work of Art, about growing into the person you always wanted to be, making the most of what you have to give and not just what you have, and the power in each of us when we chose to be ourselves.

Illumination

Everything you may have heard about enlightenment, which I call Illumination, is based on hearsay derived from metaphors too out of date for most people to fully understand. That is why I have reinterpreted the metaphors for the 21st century, making your path to Illumination easier to follow than ever!

But I wasn’t always Illuminated. I was born a Christian, born again, brought to Atheism through critical thought, and only found my way through Buddhism after a decade of hard work. Illumination was not found by following what I had been told but by searching deliberately. If you want to see the kingdom of heaven, you have to actually look.

Illumination is the essential ingredient missing from much of western religion and atheism is not designed to help you find it. Though it fits well in the atheist system – Illumination requires no god or worship – Illumination should be sought by Christians as well, for a more complete understanding of where they fit in the universe.

Because, as it turns out, Illumination (or enlightenment) is not as difficult to find as you might think. Heaven (or Nirvana) is all around you; you just need to know where and how to look. Understand such concepts as Samsara, Reincarnation, Karma, and Sunyata in ways you probably never imagined, ways that enrich your life – the only one you’ll ever get – so you don’t spend all of your time expecting it in a life after this one.

Illumination can be as simple as a change in perspective or as difficult as the destruction of the self, comprehending the significance of your own insignificance. But you can do it right now without dogma, without authoritarian rule, and without god.

Dynamic Pluralism

In the history of philosophy, there have been many theories about ethics but none have been straightforward enough to understand and use in everyday life. That ends now with Dynamic Pluralism.

Dynamic Pluralism presents a system of ethics that is not only easy to understand and easy to use but beneficial to the lives of those who do so. Dynamic Pluralism filters out the philosophical jargon so popular in academic circles and structures ethics so it is accessible to everyone. Not only does it present and understandable system of ethics but it also shows the reader how they can use ethics to create a better world.

Dynamic Pluralism casts a clear and defining light on the challenges of our century – war, overpopulation, climate change, energy dependence, equality, and much more – and illuminates our path into a brighter future.

We live in a world without a working system of ethics available to all people and this explains how and why the United States has ended up with a President-Elect like Donald Trump, a man bereft of ethical clarity, a moral compass, or any sense of justice. Dynamic Pluralism defines ethics, morals, and justice so that we may all understand them, what happens when we live without them, and how they should be used to create a better world.

Dynamic Pluralism is not just a book of philosophy. It is a Revolution in Ethics. It is a system for creating a new world based on ethical treatment, fair and fulfilling relationships, and a future in which we can finally live in peace.

Climbing Maya

What is success? What does it mean? How is it that we all look for this thing we call “success,” while each having our own idea about what it could be? Is there one definition for success? And why does the dictionary get it wrong? Find out in Climbing Maya.

Each person must find success on their own, of course. It’s either that or remain unfulfilled. Nobody tells us what it is or how to find it or even what to look for; we’re just told that it’s what we’re supposed to be. Common ideas about success include money, fame, power, and belongings – but those are all ultimately meaningless in the face of mortality.

As it turns out, “success” isn’t a thing we acquire or a place where we go. It’s not a job or a family or any one thing. It is all of these things, and when you find what they all have in common the way to success opens before you.

Success casts its great shadow, like the shadow of some unscalable mountain, across our lives. We know it’s “up there.” But what does it mean to go “up there?” Where is the map that shows us the way?

Climbing Maya was my way of finding the answer to this question of success, my way of defining the term and laying out a map to the goal. As a philosophical memoir, Climbing Maya exposes the reader to ideas about success in the works of Plato and Aristotle, Optimality Theory and Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, Maslow, and much more as I search for the final answer.

Because success, as it turns out, is not about being rich or having it all. It’s about finding that place in your life where you can breathe free, understand yourself, and take that next step towards becoming who you want to be.

Fun To Grow On Books

Are the voices in your head listening to you? Oh yes. Yes, they are listening to you. They know what you’re saying. Sometimes, they talk back. Sometimes, they sing along. Sometimes, they write children’s book with hidden messages placed in plain sight with a neon bow because, hey, a little style never hurt anyone. (This, of course, ignores the Great Style Massacre of 1973.)

Welcome to “Fun To Grow On” – the new children’s book series for adults. These books are not for little children or big babies. Each story is filled with blood and violence, sex and swearing – Seriously. This series is for adults. These are not parodies of children’s books but original stories for adults who still have a lot to learn… as do we all.

The Rule Book

If there’s one thing most people can agree on, it’s that there should be rules for life.
And they’re right. We should have a set of rules that we can all agree on, that show us how to experience happier, more authentic lives. A set of rules that cuts through the crap of everyday life to expose what it is we can all agree is true, even if it isn’t always what we want to hear.
This is why I assembled The Rule Book, a book about the truths of life – everything I could fit into 36 essays. The glass is half-empty AND half-full. Isolation is illusion. There are no “backsies.” Some days are just gonna suck. Everything – that’s right. Everything is a blessing – and that’s just the beginning.
I spent three years writing The Rule Book, finding a new rule each month. As each essay ran in Recovering the Self (www.recoveringself.com), I readied myself for what rule life would reveal (or just slap me over the head with) next month.
There are rules for life. They’re all around us if we take the time to look.

Memoirs

A Grand Canyon

One Man's Journey Through Depression

Author Ken La Salle has written over a dozen novels and his plays have been performed from coast to coast, but his most personal work remained hidden until now.

In September 2002, Ken left his home and drove to the Grand Canyon to kill himself. The only life he'd ever known was little more than a shambles. He'd lost his wife and now he realized that he really couldn't live without her. All that was left was depression, booze, and guilt - with a running start and a jump over the edge, he would end it all.

Ken's story is filled with dysfunctional families, love found and lost, breakups, breakdowns, and his attempts to end it all. It's the true story of a man lost without love and too destroyed to think he deserves love. But the most amazing part of the story isn't what set him on the road to the Grand Canyon, it's what happened... afterwards...

The Day We Said Goodbye: A Meditation on Acceptance

What do you do when your father is losing his life just as you are losing your mind?

Run like hell.

At the close of A Grand Canyon, Ken La Salle and his beloved Vicky drive off into the sunset. It’s a fairy tale ending, providing your idea of a fairy tale includes suicide attempts, hallucinations, and crippling self-doubt.

Now, in The Day We Said Goodbye, it’s time to live the dream.

The Day We Said Goodbye is Ken La Salle’s third memoir, following A Grand Canyon and Climbing Maya. It combines razor-sharp observations with revealing wisdom and the story of how goodbyes are often all we’re left with when everything you know, and everything you think you know, fades away with time. It is a book for anyone who has lost someone, anyone losing themselves… and anyone who is lost.

False Starts

I recently opened up my chest of childhood memories, faced a decade I had long since forgotten, and wrote these words:

“It was the hippest of times. It was the funkiest of times. It was the 1970s.”

And I grew up right there in the middle of it. I won talent shows. I went to camp. I fought the school bully for the honor of the girl I loved. I lost my father…

But having just turned 50, I decided the time had come to take an honest look at those years without the tinted lens of nostalgia, which allowed me to remember so much more. I never told the girl I defended that I loved her. I barely survived camp. No amount of talent show victories brought my father back and, to be honest, my memories weren’t as accurate as I thought they were.

The 70’s were a swirling minefield filled with a family destroyed by poverty and divorce, horrible TV shows, bad disco on AM radio, wretched food… and the only saving grace a child like me had was Pong. My teachers tried to put me on drugs. My sister taught me the art of shoplifting. My best friend was Burp Boy. Life was a series of constant set-backs, a barrage of defeats, embarrassments, and false starts.

And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Once Removed

You never really know a man… until he’s dead.

After Terence Montez dies in a seemingly incomprehensible suicide, his family is left to sort out the emptiness he leaves behind. Terry’s wife, Isabelle, however, wants nothing more than to return to her normal life. She wants to see her daughter, Iris, back to school and lose herself in her work.
And then, they find the first letter, a love letter Terry has left behind, stashed away with no apparent intention to be found.

One letter turns into two and three and more, each one a seemingly innocuous expression of love, each one hidden away in nooks and corners around the Montez home.

Once Isabelle and Iris see patterns in the letters, they begin to suspect a disturbing intention behind them all. Each new letter fuels their suspicions, leading Isabelle and Iris across the suburbs and shopping malls of Orange County, California, where they uncover once incredible secret after another.

As the mystery slowly builds to its fiery conclusion, Isabelle discovers the horrible truth about a life she never knew and a death she could never fathom.

Heaven Enough

Heaven Enough

Is a poem about longing, about wishing for something more. "What would it be like if I had heaven enough?" it reads.

Matt Murphy reads these words for the first time at his wife's funeral. After a death shrouded with mystery, it is the first time he learns that she wrote poetry. What happens next changes his life forever…

Daughter of a One-Armed Man

Jackson is just a Wal-Mart worker from Los Angeles, far too caught up in the apathy of modern life to believe in anything. After spending one night with the daughter of a wood nymph and the man who surrendered his arm for the woman he loved, the lithesome beauty named Mari, Jackson knows he believes. And he knows he’ll do anything to find her again.

He follows her up the coast of California and a polar bear drives the taxi. Into the forest and through frozen mountains, he talks to God and creatures of faerie alike but the final confrontation is with the mother whose people have been wiped out by mankind. They were wiped out the same way humanity is wiping itself out, with greed and disregard.

Daughter is more than just a simple love story because it also poses this question for the reader: Is love really possible? Can human beings really love each other? How is it possible for parents who pollute the world they’re leaving behind to say they love their children? How can we say we look out for each other, even as we divert our eyes to the homeless we see every day? For, if love isn’t possible, how can Jackson really say he loves Mari? Faced with proof after proof that it doesn’t exist, Jackson’s only hope is to somehow prove otherwise.
